October 25th 2019 at 2.30pm: Maltese Works of Art and Furniture

Dr. Edward Vassallo LL.D, born Valletta on the 15th October 1893 – 2nd July 1965; he married Paolina (Lina) nee Aquilina on the 24th October 1924.

Throughout his lifetime Dr. Vassallo was a Patron of the Arts. Between 1943-1946 he was President of the Malta Society of Arts and in 1943 he was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal Award by the Society.

Dr Edward Vassallo was a passionate art collector as well as a collector of stamps and coins. He assisted and promoted Maltese artists of the time. His art collection was divided among his three children after his death.

The auction includes part of the inheritance of his son Philip, now being sold by his four children. Among the works are paintings, etchings and water-colours by artists Girolamo Gianni, Giuseppe Cali, Anton Inglott, Emvin Cremona, Edward Caruana Dingli, Robert Caruana Dingli, George Fenech as well as Carmelo Borg Pisani.

Dr. Edward Vassallo lived in Sliema, in a house built in the 1900s. The property that presently houses the collection in this auction is part of Dr. Vassallo’s residence, later converted to accommodate his three children Marcelle, Philip and Monica.

This collection includes a life-sized portrait of Dr. Vassallo by Anton Inglott, see Lot 62… ANTON INGLOTT 1915-1945, oil painting on panel ‘Portrait of Edward Vassallo’ 87x120cms, signed, framed (Ill. E FIORENTINO, A Inglott, His Life & Works, 5.39, Pg 108)
